Carolina loses, 6-2, to Isles on home ice

In Raleigh, the New York Islanders’ Josh Bailey s scored in the 16th minute of the second period to snap a 2-2 tie with the Hurricanes and help send the Isles to a 6-2 win on Friday night.

It was Bailey’s 1,000th NHL game, New York’s Mathew Barzal set up the winner.

“‘Barzy,’ when he gets the puck, you’re just trying to find open ice,” Bailey said. “He curled up and the timing worked out well. I was able to put a good move on him and put it in the back of the net.”

Ilya Sorokin made 33 saves in the Isles win.

Brock Nelson hit for a double in the third period and Zach Parise added an empty-net goal for the 6-2 final.

“For Josh, it’s fun to see that,” Nelson said. “You can’t write it any better, him getting the game-winner. Huge part of the franchise and this team, so well deserved.”

Brent Burns and Martin Necas were the Canes’ strikers.

“Their goalie played really well, I give him a lot of credit,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “But their team game, I think they played their best game in the [five] years I’ve been [coaching] against them. By far the best game they’ve played.”

Oliver Wahlstrom  and Matt Martin also scored for New York.

Frederik Andersen made 28 saves in the Carolina loss.

“We were a little sloppy with the puck a few times,” Carolina captain Jordan Staal said. “A couple of miscues, and they made us pay.”
