Carolina edge Red Wings, 2-1 Staal scores winner in middle frame

In Detroit, the Carolina Hurricanes’ Jordan  Stall scored at 11:49 of the middle frame on Thursday night to snap a 1-1 tie with the Red Wings.

“This started out as a road trip from Hell, but the boys kept scrapping and we were able to get these last two,” Staal said. “[Kochetkov] played really well in both games, and he was really a difference-maker for us tonight.”

The Canes had cleared the puck into the Detroit zone and it come off the backboards on an erratic bounce, fooled Ville Husso, the Red Wings goalie, leaving an empty net for Stall to tap into.

That was enough as the Canes protected the lead for a 2-1 win.

Pyotr Kochetkov made 25 saves in the win.

The Hurricanes improved to 16-12-1.

Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a marker from Jack Drury at 4:48, just two seconds after a Canes power play expired..

Detroit dropped to 15-10-4.

“They are about as aggressive a team as you’re going to play, especially on the forecheck,” Detroit’s Ben Chiarot said. “They sell out pretty much on every puck, and they’ve been doing it for a while now. There’s not a lot of room on the ice against them.”

The Red Wings got on the board at 5:20 of the second period to tie the game, 1-1, on a strike by Michael Rasmussen.

The goal came after a turnover inside the Canes blueline  as they tried to break out.

V. Husso made 37 saves in the loss.

“Ville was excellent,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “It’s frustrating, because that was his best game in a while, and then he had one miscue. That probably reflects our overall game a little bit. We have to be good all the time.”
