In Raleigh Sunday night, the Carolina Hurricanes got a goal from Andrei Svechnikov to break a 5-5 tie and send the Canes to an 8-5 win over the struggling New York Rangers.
The Rangers had been playing decent defense through the first two games with limited offense, but Sunday they opened up their offense and forgot about their defensive assignments.
“I’m super happy and excited,” said the 18-year-old Svechnikov, who was the No. 2 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. “Thankfully he was shooting the puck on net and I tipped the puck. It was cool.”
Petr Mrazek made 19 saves to get the win for the Canes.
“I don’t think we’re going to want too many of those [games]. It kind of got into a track meet for a little bit,” said Hurricanes forward Jordan Martinook, who had a goal and an assist. “Just play better defensively and hopefully keep scoring lots of goals and we’ll be fine.”
After taking the lead in the third period Warren Foegele (two goals on the night) and Teuvo Teravainen scored to make the final 8-5.
“Even when we got down two, you could just feel on the bench there was no panic,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “That’s a real positive. Maybe with the young guys, they don’t know any better. I like that they just kept digging in.”
Jordan Staal and Micheal Ferland also scored for the Canes.
Jimmy Vesey and Chris Kreider struck for two goals each in the loss and Pavel Buchnevich scored his second of the season in the loss.

Alexandar Georgiev made 32 saves in the loss.
“Sometimes you have to know when you don’t have it, and that’s when you keep it more simple. Manage the game better; that’s what a pro does. I guess we were excited about scoring goals and just abandoned what we’ve been doing,” Rangers head coach David Quinn said after the dismal loss.
