In ANaheim, Owen Tippett hit for a double for the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night in a 6-3 win over the Ducks.
Samuel Ersson made 35 saves in the win..
“Tonight, he looked so much more calm,” Philadelphia coach John Tortorella said of Ersson. “He was in position on a lot of pucks. I thought he had some good battles. They were in front of our net a lot tonight too, and I thought he fought his way through it. So, this was certainly his best game that he’s played for us this year.”
The Flyers moved to 6-7-1.
Anaheim rookie Leo Carlsson scored his first NHL hat trick the Ducks loss.
“He’s a player,” Anaheim coach Greg Cronin said. “He’s going to be a star in this league. I mean, he could have had five goals, really. Missed a couple, but he’s a star player.”
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the first period, Sean Couturier struck first, at 4:57 for a 1-0 advantage.
Cam Atkinson pushed it to 2-0 at 12:31 of the opening stanza.
The loss was the second straight for the Ducks, after having won six in a row.
“The first five minutes, we’re just rolling lines and getting pressure, and that’s the way we have to play,” Cronin said. “I don’t think there were any turnovers the first five minutes, and then we just decided we were going to play pond hockey, and they took advantage of it.”
The Flyers extended the lead to 3-0 at 2:33 of the middle frame on a marker from Louie Belpedio.
Carlsson potted his first of the night at 13:15 of the second, off the power play, to cut the deficit to 3-1.
In the third, Travis Sanheim added a marker at 7:39 of the period to push the Flyers’ advantage back to three at 4-1.
“That’s who he is now,” Tortorella said of Sanheim. “He’s a different person. I didn’t get a sniff of that last year. I think he feels that good about himself to make plays like that.”
The Ducks dropped to 7-6-0.
Carlsson potted his double midway through the third for a 4-2, the goal coming off a pass from Alex Killorn.
“As I said, two great passes,” Carlsson said of Killorn. “The second one was an open goal kind of, so it’s nice.”
Tippett picked up his first of the game at 13:07 to deflate the Ducks and give Philadelphia a 5-2 lead.
Carlsson completed his hat trick off a power strike at 18:32 to get the Ducks within two at 5-3, Tippett picked up his double at 18:59 into an open net for the 6-3 final.
“I don’t know if they were trying to give it to me, but just give it to the guy who’s open,” Carlsson said. “I don’t think it has sunk in yet, but tomorrow, probably will enjoy it for sure.”
Lukas Dostal made 30 saves in the loss.
