Cardiff edge Storm in second feisty meeting

What was a feisty game in Cardiff on Friday night continued into the Storm Shelter on Saturday. Connor Caponi gave the Devils an early shorthanded lead on a 3-on-1 rush, before multiple altercations saw 62 penalty minutes handed out in the opening period.

Loren Ulett and Tyson Helgeson both received fighting majors just over six minutes in, while four minutes later Riley Brandt was ejected for slashing. Kyle Locke and Sam Duggan also picked up fighting penalties after an incident involving Bradley Jenion behind the play.

Kaleb Ergang tied things up at 11:18 with a shot from the faceoff dot in an opening period that took almost 50 minutes to complete. Josh MacDonald hit the crossbar and Ben Davies saw a breakaway stopped by Drew DeRidder as the Devils finished the period with a flurry of chances.

A much tamer middle period saw the Devils and Storm at a stalemate for the first half until a point shot from Gleason Fournier was tipped in front by Kohen Olischefski to put the visitors ahead at 30:07.

The period featured plenty of four-on-four action as the Storm repeatedly took penalties while on the powerplay themselves, and despite chances for both teams no further goals were scored.

Olischefski’s goal would prove to be the game winner. The Storm pulled DeRidder with just over two minutes to play after calling a timeout, but stoppages and blocked shots kept them from tying the game.
