SHEFFIELD, UK – The only goal of the first period was from the Steelers after Guillaume Desbiens stole the puck in his own zone and found Colton Fretter streaking across the ice. Fretter buried the puck past Bowns to make it 1-0 at the 6:57 of the opening period.
The scoreless second period was highlighted by a penalty shot for Levi Nelson but Ben Bowns stopped the shot and kept the Devils within a goal after 40 minutes.
Fretter doubled the Steelers lead 3:53 into the third when he danced through the Devils defence and snuck the puck past Bowns. Just when the Steelers thought the Devils were down and out, the visitors took over, with the comeback starting when Sean Bentivoglio batted in a rebound after an Andrew Lord attempt to make it 2-1 at 45:07. Then Guillaume Doucet tied the game by jamming the puck past Ervins Mustokovs from behind the goal at 48:30.
At 49:32 Patrick Asselin tapped in a perfect pass from Scott Hotham who battled his way towards the Steelers net before laying the puck onto Asselin’s stick to give the Devils the lead. At 53:45, Asselin scored his second of the night, an unassisted goal as he was bowled over into the goalie as the puck snuck into the back of the net. The Steelers protested, but the goal stood and the Devils were in the lead 4-2.
The Steelers pulled Mustokovs with 2 minutes still to play and piled on the pressure. They were then given a powerplay to finish off the game, but Ben Bowns stood tall and kept the Steelers at bay to hold on for the 4-2 win.
Asselin was the rightful choice for Man of the Match with his two goals, while Ben Bowns made 27 saves for the win. The Devils were 0 for 2 on the powerplay while the Steelers were 0 for 5.
