A disappointing end to the weekend for the Steelers going down 5-2 at home to the Cardiff Devils.
Steelers had taken Challenge Cup points in Cardiff on Saturday but Andrew Lord’s side hit back with a vengeance.
It was the Steelers first defeat in 6 games and the first in league play.
Andrew Hotham opened the scoring at 10.47 with player coach Andrew Lord assisting.
Valdix’s penalty for cross checking was quickly punished, just 12 seconds into the Devils power-play and Mark Richardson doubled Cardiff’s lead.
Sean Bentivoglio scored the Devils third at 23.00 with the momentum only going one way with the Devils in full control
Stand forward Zack Fitzgerald as he tried to energise his team and the Arena crowd. His fight with Mark Louis did just that with the fans engrossed in the lengthy bout.
Steelers responded well with Robert Dowd scoring at 24.11 with assists to Valdix and Davey Phillips.
The momentum had swung and the Steelers were back in the game, chances followed, Roy, Dowdy, Mosienko and Fitzgerald.
Davey Phillips penalty for roughing at 34.12 gave Cardiff respite and the Devils took full advantage scoring on the power-play at 34.40, Bentivoglio netting his second to make it 4-1
To make matters worse the Devils scored a 5th goal – just 45 seconds before the end of the period as Doucet, assisted Haddad and Hotham put the final nail in the Steelers coffin.
Steelers did manage a second goal of their own, Dowd again scoring, this time on the power-play at 44.20.
It was to be too little too late and the weekend that had started so well ended in disappointment.
