Caps stun Flyers with five unanswered goals, win 5-3

In Washington Wednesday, the Capitals gave the Philadelphia Flyers a little time to build a 2-0 lead in the first period.

The Caps let the line out through 20 minutes then yanked the Flyers back to reality with five unanswered goals to race past them for a 5-3 win.

The highlight of the rally was a pair of strikes by Chandler Stephenson that came just 47 seconds apart of each other.

Andre Burakovsky, T.J. Oshie and Devante Smith-Pelly also scored in the scoring streak.

“It’s a four-point game (in the standings),” Eller said. “Everybody’s fighting for [Stanley Cup] Playoff spots. We’ve got a bit of a gap now, but they could creep up fast, and you don’t want that. I think it was bigger than it might look or might feel right now because it’s going to be tight.”

The Caps improved to 30-15-5 with the win.

Nolan Patrick, Travis Konecny struck in the first period for the 2-0 Flyers lead.

Braden Holtby made 27 saves to pick up the win for the Caps.

Jakub Voracek ended the five-goal barrage from the Caps when he scored late in the third period.

“We were up 2-0 in a tough building, so we just have to make sure to find a way to keep the game close,” Voracek said. “We did. We were down 3-2, which is not a bad spot here in Washington, but it got away with those two quick goals.”

Michal Neuvirth got the start for the Flyers and made 15 saves in the loss.  He was given the hook midway through the third period.

“I thought we evened things out and pushed back and got our game going again through most of the rest of the second period,” Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said. “Even giving up the (Burakovsky) power-play goal. It’s the start of the second that changed the complexion of the hockey game.”

Alex Lyon made his NHL debut after being called up from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL and made five saves.
