In Washington, DC, TJ Oshie scored with less than two minutes left in extra time to send the Capitals to a 2-1 win over the pesky Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.
Ilya Samsonov made 27 saves to get the win after a dismal loss to the Boston Bruins ahead of the break.
“I think we knew every time when we lost a game or something that happened, we have to regroup and go back and bounce back,” Alex Ovechkin said. “You can see everybody was in tonight. It was not a pretty game but we’ll take the points.”
Jakob Lilja scored for the Blue Jackets in regulation; it was his first NHL goal.
“It’s a team that has a little bit of belief in it as far as all the new bodies,” Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. “I think it can show us some things as far as if you play hard as a team and care just about the team and not thyself, I think you can get some things accomplished. The amount of injuries we’ve had, the people coming up here and playing, it’s a good group to be around.”
Carl Hagelin scored in the third period on the power play to push the game to the extra session.
“I thought the second half of the game the guys did a lot better job of just going to the net and throwing pucks there and trying to find rebounds,” Oshie said. “We were crashing the net a little bit more and sustaining some zone time, which is always nice to spend your energy down there than in the D-zone.”

Joonas Korpisalo made 34 saves in the loss.
“I think we did do a lot of good things but I think the takeaway might be how we played in the third period,” Columbus’ Riley Nash said. “We played too much on our heels. A good team like that, they’re just going to keep coming at you when they get opportunities … so I think next time hopefully we can play a little bit more on our toes and more in the offensive zone and try to add to our lead or work the clock down there.”
