The Philadelphia Flyers are a mess. Sure, they are not alone. They are not unique in a season where NHL clubs flail about looking for answers.
But Tuesday night, they started their seventh goalie in net to tie an NHL record.
Former Vancouver Canucks goalie, Mike McKenna, got the start for the Flyers and made 21 saves in the losing effort.
“I’d be lying to you if I didn’t say it was a little bit of a challenge just from a lot of different logistical standpoints,” said McKenna, who has played 35 games for seven NHL teams, “but my job is to play hockey and be a goaltender and stop the puck, and no matter what team I’m on, I’m going to do that to the best of my ability.”
McKenna was claimed off waivers on January 4.
T.J. Oshie and Jakub Vrana each struck for two goals in the win.
Tom Wilson also scored for the Caps.
Pheonix Copley made 37 saves for the Caps in the win.
“[Copley] has been awesome. You don’t know him that well and he comes in and we’re pretty lucky to have two [goalies] that can steal a game for us on any given night. Obviously not ideal to give up those two late. It’s not fair to him, but he’s one of the backbones of our team,” Wilson said after the game.
Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds and Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers.
“I think in the first we had a great answer on the first goal and I thought we had some momentum, and the second period got us again,” Philadelphia defenseman Radko Gudas said.
Washington improved to 26-12-4.
“When you play 40 minutes, you’re not going to win many games. I mean, if you play 40 great and 20 good, maybe you have a chance, but if you play 40 good and 20 absolutely brutal like we did again (in second period), we have no chance,” Voracek said.

The Flyers have now lost eight straight and dropped to 15-22-6.
“The job doesn’t change,” Flyers head coach Scott Gordon said. “You still have to coach the team. We’ll prepare and do the work that we have to do and stay on top of things.”
