In Washington, DC, the Capitals rallied with two goals in the third period to force a tie and extra time with the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.
New Jersey replied with Nico Hischier‘s second goal of the game in a 4-3 OT win.
New Jersey improved to 13-15-5.
Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves in the win.
“You can see it, we’re playing hard, we’re playing smart,” Hischier said. “We’re skating again and most importantly we’re playing our system and we know with our system, if we play it, we stop and everybody does his job, it’s tough to play against.”
The Caps’ Nic Dowd and Conor Sheary scored in the third period to even the game at 3-3.
“Proud of the team for battling back in a game,” the Capitals’ Tom Wilson said. “We could have started maybe a little bit better. We gave them time and space, made them feel fast and against a team like that, it’s dangerous.”
John Carlson also scored for Washington.
Damon Severson and Yegor Sharangovich also scored for New Jersey.
“We made eye contact … and I just kept creeping, creeping. It’s one of those plays where you just connect,” Severson said. “I saw him look at me. I just figured if I kept going back there, he’d find me, and I took the shot.”
Ilya Samsonov made 33 saves in the Caps loss.
