In Washington, DC, Ilya Samsonov made 16 saves and helped the Capitals down the Arizona Coyotes, 2-0, on Friday night.
For Arizona, it was their eighth straight loss to start the season.
The Coyotes did keep the Caps scoreless through 40 minutes.
“I don’t think our guys were frustrated (after two periods), but sometimes you try to do more than you should and get outside of what is working for you,” Washington head coach Peter Laviolette said. “So just staying on point and keeping the pedal down inside of the structure and inside of the system and guys did a really good job.”
The Coyotes are 0-7-1.
“It’s bittersweet. It’s a lot of good things [tonight], but again, we’re not in this business to get moral victories,” Arizona head coach Andre Tourigny said. “But we need to see the positive and see that it’s coming. We’re playing better.”
John Carlson broke the scoreless tie in the third period with a power play goal.
Alex Ovechkin added an empty-net goal to ice the win with 21 seconds left in the game.
Karel Vejmelka made 30 saves in the Arizona loss.
