Caps edge Ottawa, 3-2, in OT

In Ottawa, Marcus Johansson hit for the game-winner at 2:04 of extra time on Thursday night to give the Washington Capitals a 3-2 win over the Senators.“I just saw that we were able to get a [line] change and they were a little bit tired,” Johansson said. “Once I got it, I saw a little hole and figured I’d give it a run, and it was good to see one go in.”

Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves for the Washington win.

The Caps improved to 18-13-4.

Ottawa took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a marker from Alex DeBrincat.

“That was hard fought,” said Tkachuk, the Ottawa captain. “(We) dealt with a lot of adversity today and (I) thought we handled it well. But we wish we could have gotten that second point. It’s just how it is, and you’ve got to move on from it, but yeah, it’s a gutsy effort by a lot of guys tonight with all those injuries.”

Washington tied it at 7:01 of the first on a goal from Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Ottawa dropped to 147-16-3.

Sonny Milano restored the the Caps lead in the middle frame on a strike for a 2-1 advantage headed to the third period.

The Senators’ Drake Batherson  extended his point streak to 10 games with a power play strike in the third to tie at 2-2 and force the extra session.

“He was outstanding,” Ottawa coach D.J. Smith said of Talbot. “That’s what you need on the nights where you run into stuff like this. That’s a good team … I mean, that’s one of the hottest teams in the League.”

Cam Talbot made 37 saves in the Ottawa loss.
