And you thought the David Quinn era was dreadful?
Well, you might be excused for thinking you were in Mr. Peabody’s way-back machine on Wednesday night as the New York Rangers were drubbed by the Capitals in Washington, DC, 5-1.
The Caps went 3-for-6 on power play and scored off a shorthanded situation.
Alex Ovechkin scored twice for the Caps.
Vitek Vanecek made 23 saves for the easy win.
Chris Kreider had a so what power play goal in the third period to spoil the shut out bid.
“Two different games,” Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant said. “I thought the first 33 minutes we were really good even though were behind 2-0, a couple of power play goals that they scored. They got the bounces on both of them. But I thought we played a [heck] of a 33 minutes and after that we weren’t too good.”
TJ Oshie opened the scoring the first period to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.
Washington opened it up in the middle frame with goals from Justin Schultz and Hendrix Lapierre for a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.
“I knew when I called [for] the puck he was going to pass it to me, and I got lucky. I just put the puck at the net,” Lapierre said. “It was just so fun. The crowd was so incredible, and for a first game I don’t think I could have asked for a better one, and we got a great win.”
Ovechkin added his two goals in the third period, wrapped around the Kreider goal.
New York was 1-for-5 on the power play, and gave up the shorthanded marker in the third.
If this is the best the Rangers have to offer, this will be a very long season.
“Especially against a team like Washington, you don’t want to take too many penalties,” New York’s Mika Zibanejad said. “That’s something we have to get better at in the future and think about, but without taking anything away from our aggressiveness and playing hard.”
Alexandar Georgiev made 22 saves in the loss.
“I thought we had chances early then maybe chased the game a bit,” New York’s Adam Fox said.
