The Capitals dropped to 36-30-10 off their fifth straight loss.
In the middle frame, Guentzel potted his first of the contest at 14:30, scoring off a tip in for to trim the deficit to 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Carolina got even, 2-2, when Martin Necas hit off the power play at 11:40 of the third period.
Darcy Kuemper made 42 saves in the loss.
