One thing Washington needs either way is a younger, more effective defense. Karl Alzner and John Carlson have solid futures, but blueliners such as Mike Green, John Erskine, Roman Hamrlik and Dennis Wideman have each seen better days. The need for a solid defensive corps is especially important with the Capitals intent on relying on the young goaltending tandem of Braden Holtby and Michal Neuvirth.
For those reasons, Jacob Trouba would be a solid choice with the 11th overall pick in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot-2, 191-pound Michigan native has garnered praise for his aggressive play and hockey sense, and represented the United States at the 2012 U20 and U18 World Junior Championship tournaments.
Six of his nine goals came on the power play — evidence of a booming shot that some scouts believe could turn him into a power-play quarterback. The Capitals probably would prefer he develop into a reliable two-way blueliner who can clear out bodies in front of his net. Trouba will get seasoning next year at the University of Michigan.
Because of his poise, experience competing at elite levels and power, we expect to hear the following announcement come draft day.
“With the 11th pick, the Washington Capitals select defenseman Jacob Trouba of the U.S. National Junior Team.
