Capitals outscore Ottawa, 7-5

In Ottawa, the Washington Capitals needed all the goals they could  muster on Monday night in a 7-5 win over the Senators.

T.J. Oshie popped in a hat trick for the Caps.

“I thought he was really good tonight,” Washington head coach Peter Laviolette said. “He worked really hard. He turned over a lot of pucks. I thought his line was good. But you could notice, Oshie was moving and making a difference just by the forecheck and turning things over.”

Alex Ovechkin added two strikes in the win.

“He (Oshie was flying today,” Ovechkin said. “It seems like every time he takes a shot or makes a play, it 100 percent goes in the net or goes off a stick. I think their line played very well. It was nice to see him get a hatty.”

Ilya Samsonov made 32 saves for the Caps win.

“It was a fun game for the fans,” Ovechkin said. “Lots of goals, lots of action. We’ll take the two points and move forward.”

Ottawa’s Drake Batherson added a hat trick of his own in the loss.

“We weren’t ready to play defense out the gate,” Senators head coach D.J. Smith said. “We didn’t track hard enough against their big players, [they] made us pay and Oshie gets three and Ovechkin gets two.”

Josh Norris and Chris Tierney  had single markers for the Senators.

John Carlson and Nick Jensen also scored for the Caps.

Anton Forsberg made 12 saves and surrendered four goals before getting the hook midway through the first period.

Filip Gustavsson made 23 saves in relief.
