Capitals edge Isles, 3-2, in OT Strome hits winner in extra session

In Washington, DC, Dylan Strome hot off the power play at 1:41 of extra time on Wednesday night to give the Capitals a 3-2 win over the visiting New York Islanders.

“We may not score the most goals right now, or this season so far, but we’re finding ways to win tight games,” said Strome. “I think it’s a good look on us when we can win these 2-1, 3-2, 1-0 type games.”

The Caps improved to 16-9-4.

Darcy Kuemper made 30 saves in the win.

The Islanders’ Anders Lee s made the extra session necessary when he scored at 12:02 of the third period.

“That’s a big point,” said Lee. “Obviously would have loved to get two, but considering the circumstances, how the game was going, how we were feeling … it wasn’t our best game, but we found a way to end the game 2-2 and give ourselves a chance in overtime. You’re going to have nights where you’ve got to find a way just to tie it up and give yourself a chance at the end.”

The Islanders dropped to 15-8-9.

“I thought we got better as the game went on,” New York coach Lane Lambert said. “Our start wasn’t good enough, so we’ve got to fix that in these back-to-back situations, but we stuck with it, and we got another good goaltending performance as we usually do every night.”

Hendrix Lapierre scored midway through the opening stanza to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.

“[Lapierre] was great,” Strome said. “He was controlling the puck. He made some good plays. … He goes down to the AHL and gets some confidence and scores.”

New York tied it, 1-1, in the middle frame on a strike by Hudson Fasching with 63 seconds of fresh ice used.

Joel Edmundson scored at 13:12 of the second to restore the lead to Washington, 2-1, headed to the third period.
