Canucks top Kings, 2-1, in OT Miller hits for winner in extra time

In Los Angeles, the Canucks’ J.T. Miller hit for the game winner with 1:36 gone in extra time on Tuesday to send Vancouver to a 2-1 win over the Kings.

Miller’s goal came on a delayed penalty, off a shot from the left circle.

Thatcher Demko made 23 saves in the win.

The Canucks improved to 40-17-7

“I think that’s what we need to do, have a good structure, good defense and we will get our looks from that,” Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson said. “I think that was slipping a little bit lately, but we talked about getting it back on track.”

LA took a 1-0 lead when Trevor Motte scored midway through the first period.

“Both teams had their chances,” Moore said. “It felt like a really tight-checking game out there. We won the first period, they won the second, draw in the third. And they won overtime, so it happens.

The Kings dropped to 31-19-1.

Pettersson knotted the game, 1-1 at 16:36 of the middle frame, scoring off a wrist shot on the right side.

“It’s been a few games since I got a goal, so I was happy to get it in,” said Pettersson, who has 30 goals for the third straight season.

In the third period, Demko made a highlight reel save on Alex Turcotte  to preserve the tie.

“Unreal save,” Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said. “That’s a highlight one that will probably be on tonight and the rest of the month. It came at a crucial time.”

Cam Talbot made 29 saves in the loss.
