In Vancouver Friday night, Alexandre Burrows broke out of a slump that lasted for 17 games as he had an assist and scored in the shootout to lift the Canucks to a 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks.
“It’s been a while, so it’s always nice to contribute a little,” Burrows said. “It’s just nice to contribute and help the team win. We’re in a battle for the playoffs, we have to find ways to be better.”
Ryan Kesler staked the Ducks to a 1-0 lead at7:24 of the second period.
“You’ve got to score more than one, you can’t keep doing this, but then again we hit five posts,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “We’re getting opportunities every night like this to score where you’d think that in past times this same group would get four or five [goals], but now we’re getting one. It’s tough on the goalies to be perfect.”
The loss snapped a three-game win streak the Ducks were riding.
Christopher Tanev scored at 10:24 of the third period to tie the game.
“He (Burrows) beat two guys and then got the puck up to me,” Tanev said. “I was just trying to get it by the first guy and then he went to the net and ended up screening the goalie too.”
Jacob Markstrom made 27 saves in the game and stopped all three Ducks shooters in the skills competition.
“Coming in we talked a lot in the room that this was a must game and guys stepped it up,” Markstrom said.
The strong defensive play has continued for the Ducks; they were the best defensive team in the month of December in the NHL but their offense has continued to elude them.
“It’s just the way our season has gone,” Anaheim’s Kevin Bieksa said.
Frederik Andersen took the loss on 24 saves.
