Canucks thump Flyers, 5-1

In Vancouver, five different skaters struck for the Canucks in a 5-1 thumping of the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.

Jacob Markstrom made 31 saves as the Canucks improved to 4-0-1 in their five games.

“I don’t think it was our best hockey, but we found a way to get it done, and I think that’s encouraging,” the Canucks’ Brock Boeser said.

Boeser, Christopher Tanev, Loui Eriksson, Josh Leivo, and Markus Granlund were on the scoresheet for the Canucks.

“Our top two lines have been getting a lot of people talking about our young players,” head coach Travis Green said. “But it was nice tonight that our third and fourth lines, I thought they played a good game tonight and calmed the waters when it was going back and forth a bit.”

Vancouver improved to 15-16-4.

Scott Laughton was the lone goal scorer for the Flyers.

“It’s a pretty empty feeling right now,” Laughton said. “We’ve got a tight group off the ice, but it’s got to translate on the ice and it’s got to happen quick here.”

Philadelphia lost four straight on the road trip after winning the opening match; they were outscored 9-2 in their last two games.

“It’s one of the most frustrating times in my professional career, 100 percent,” Radko Gudas said. “We let our goalies down, we let our fans down, we let everybody down, so it’s not on the coach’s shoulders. We have to perform better, we have to play as a group better.”

The Flyers dropped to 12-15-4.

Anthony Stolarz got the start for the Flyers for left the game in the first period with an injury; he made two saves on four shots.

“The first two were probably the first two scoring chances against,” Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said. “It’s tough when you are battling from behind, but we did battle.”

Alex Lyon made 17 saves for the Flyers in relief of Stolarz.
