Canucks thump Caps, 6-2

The Canucks struck for three power play goals Thursday night in a 6-2 win over Washing Capitals in Vancouver.

Sven Baertschi netted two two power-play goals and  Bo Horvatadded the third on the night.

“We simplified it a bit,” Baertschi said. “Just getting pucks on the net and then playing off the rebounds. I thought we were really effective that way. Sometimes it’s easier to go simple.”

The Canucks improved to 6-3-1 on the season.

Thomas Vanekgave Vancouver an early 1-0 lead before the club when on a 3-for-6 stretch on the power play.

“It’s nice to finally get rewarded on the power play,” Horvat said. “I feel like it was just a matter of time. We’ve had tons of chances in past games. For it to start going in, it definitely gives our group a lot of confidence.”

Markus Granlund and Derek Dorsett  also scored for the Canucks.

“We’ve said from Day One we want to be a four-line team. That’s the only way we’re going to have success. The guys have bought in. Give them credit,” Canucks head coach Travis Green after his club got scoring from across the bench.

Anders Nilsson made 25 saves to pick up the win.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Chandler Stephenson had the goals for the Caps.

The Caps rank 29th in the league in the penalty kill.

“We can’t kill anything,” Caps head coach Barry Trotz said. “It starts with failed clears.”

Braden Holtby took the loss on 177 saves,

“We’ve got some work to do and I need to get better,” Holtby said. “There’s a lot of things we need to work on. Finding our identity is the main thing. We are still playing like our team from last year. We knew it wasn’t going to come easy, it wasn’t going to come quickly, but we are far enough into the season now that we are not going to use the excuse of being young and different anymore. It’s time to start performing and that includes myself.”
