Canucks stay alive with OT win over Vegas

In Vancouver, Quinn Hughes  scored 51 seconds gone in extra time on Tuesday to give the Canucks a 5-4 win over the visiting Vegas Golden Knights.

Vegas lost ground in the loss, with the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators each take 1-0 wins on the same night.

Thatcher Demko made 41 saves to get the win for Vancouver.

Elias Pettersson had a goal for the Canucks.

“It’s pretty clear what we’ve got to do. We’ve got to win,” Pettersson said. “We feel pretty good now, we’ve won four in a row, but it doesn’t mean [much] if we don’t continue this way, playing good hockey. We’re still behind, we’ve still got to win games.”

Vancouver improved to 36-28-10, but with Dallas and Nashville each winning, the Canucks are still six points back of a wild card spot.

Bo Horvat  and Vasily Podkolzin also scored for the Canucks.

Vancouver was 2-for-4 of power play.

“If we can get one or two power-play goals a game and keep shutting them out, that’s the difference at this part of the season, one goal,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “Special teams are going to make a huge difference.”

Shea Theodore hit for a double for Vegas, both of his goals came in the third period after the Knights entered the frame trailing by two, 2-4.

“There’s no quit in this team. There hasn’t been all year and it was an important point,” coach Peter DeBoer said. “We’ll take the point. I think we’re going to have to be better than that down the stretch in order to get where we want to go.”

Alec Martinez struck once and had two points in the loss.

“Proud of the way the guys battled back,” Martinez said. “Getting points this time of year is big, but that said, we’re shooting for two, not one.”

The Golden Knights dropped to 40-29-5.

Michael Amadio also scored for the Golden Knights.

Brad Richardson scored for the Canucks in the middle frame to give them a 4-2 lead heading to the third.

Robin Lehner made 22 saves in the Vegas loss.
