Canucks roll on with OT win over Colorado

Don’t tell the Vancouver Canucks they are not supposed to be here at the top of the Pacific Division.

They don’t care and they are having fun at the expense of the doubters.

On Friday night, Derrick Pouliot struck late in overtime to give the Canucks a 7-6 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Vancouver improved to 9-6-0 with the victory.

Canucks rookie, Elias Petterson, struck twice and had five points for the night to set a record for the franchise as the youngest player to collect five points in a game.

“I think if everyone is heading to the same goal and everyone is focused to do what they can to bring to the team and do that every game, good things will happen,” Pettersson said. “And I think we started the season that way.”

Brock Boeser scored two goals and Loui Eriksson and Markus Granlund added single markers.

“Our team showed a lot of resolve,” Canucks coach Travis Green said. “That was a fun game to coach. I’m not going to complain about anything tonight. That was a hell of a win,” Vancouver head coach Travis Green  said.

Jacob Markstrom made 23 saves to get the win.

“Our young players are really confident in themselves and it wears off on other players, too. Even though we’re down by one with a minute left, they’re confident that they’re going to score and they go to the net. And that’s that,” Markstrom,  said.

Sheldon Dries, Ian Cole, Alexander Kerfoot, and Nikita Zadorov scored for the Avs.

“I think the score is a lot lower if both goalies play well. I didn’t think the goalies were that great tonight and it ended up looking like it was a bit of a shootout even though the shots were low,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said after the loss.

Nathan MacKinnon had two goals in the loss.

“We’ve not been very good defensively,” MacKinnon said. “I thought we were way better tonight, but every time we made a mistake, they found a way to score.”

Philipp Grubauer made 30 saves in the loss.

“It wasn’t the best road trip,” Grubauer said. “If we’re smart as a team we’ll learn from this road trip, learn from our mistakes.”
