Canucks rally in OT to defeat Sharks

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Elias Pettersson scored with 35 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 6-5 win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Wednesday.

Pettersson scored from the left circle off a pass from Andrei Kuzmenko.

Kuzmenko tied it 5-5 at 16:07 of the third period with a power-play goal when he redirected a Pettersson shot at the left post.

Dakota Joshua scored twice, and Spencer Martin made 34 saves for the Canucks (12-12-3), who have won six of eight.

Logan Couture had a goal and an assist, and Tomas Hertl had two assists for the Sharks (8-16-5), who have lost seven of eight (1-5-2). Kaapo Kahkonen made 15 saves through two periods before being replaced by Eetu Makiniemi, who made seven saves in his NHL debut.

Nick Bonino gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 18 seconds of the first period, deflecting a shot by Matt Benning.

Joshua tied it 1-1 at 4:15 on a rebound, then made it 2-1 at 19:35 on a power play.

Nils Hoglander extended Vancouver’s lead to 3-1 at 1:34 of the second period when he scored short side.

Timo Meier cut it to 3-2 at 7:27 on a power play.

It appeared Joshua had scored his first NHL hat trick to make it 4-2 at 8:02, but the Sharks successfully challenged the play for goaltender interference.

Couture tied it 3-3 at 10:53 on a breakaway, San Jose’s first short-handed goal of the season.

Ilya Mikheyev put Vancouver ahead 4-3 at 19:28 on a breakaway after Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson turned the puck over.

Jonah Gadjovich tied it 4-4 at 2:45 of the third period with a shot from the left circle before Kevin Labanc gave San Jose a 5-4 lead at 11:28 with a slap shot from the left circle.
