Canucks post four in first period, cruise to win over Ottawa

In Vancouver, the Canucks posted four first period goals en route to a 5-2 win over the visiting Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

Antoine Roussel returned to action for the Canucks after recovering from surgery; he scored on his first shift.

“I couldn’t have written it better,” Roussel said. “First shift, first goal, it was awesome. It takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders.”

That goal gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead was followed by strikes from Tanner Pearson, Elias Pettersson and Zack MacEwen.

Thatcher Demko made 40 saves in the win.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Tyler Ennis were the Senators strikers, Ottawa has lost five straight.

“It’s on the leaders,” Ennis said. “We just weren’t ready to go.”

Oscar Fantenberg scored for Vancouver after the Senators had gained some momentum cutting the deficit to 2-4.

“It took away some momentum, for sure,” Ennis said.

Anders Nilsson made 11 saves in the first period and was given the hook in the first intermission.

“He’s been one of the best goalies in the League and he’s been our backbone,” Ennis said. “We can’t be giving up backdoor tap-ins.”

Marcus Hogberg made 13 saves over the final 40 minutes.
