In Denver Wednesday night, the Vancouver Canucks got a lift from two goals from Sven Baertschi as they defeated the Avalanche, 3-2.
Baertschi scored the game-winner on the power play mid-way through the third period.
“It was good to get that one,” Canucks coach Willie Desjardins said. “I thought it was going to be a tough game, and it was. They’ve got lots of speed up front. They came back (from 2-0), they didn’t quit, and it was big for us to get that power-play goal.”
With the win, Vancouver moved into the wild card positioning with a record of Canucks (23-20-6)
Gabriel Landeskog was in the box for apenalty on the game-winner.
“It was a dumb play on my part and it ends up costing us,” Landeskog said. “We stayed out of the box the whole time until then.”

Jacob Markstrom made 30 saves to get the Vancouver win.
Matt Nieto tied the game at 2-2 in the third and Mikko Rantanen poked a dribbler between Markstrom’s pads to get the Avs on the board earlier.
“I thought I had it for sure and then it squeezed through,” Markstrom said of Rantaenen’s goal. “It’s very frustrating because I felt like we played a really, really good game and they didn’t have much at all. Then to let in a goal like that to give them life and then now it’s a hockey game all of a sudden.”
Calvin Pickard took the loss on saves.
“We take a penalty on a backcheck in the third period … you look at the goals we gave up, a turnover behind our own net, unforced basically, and it ends up in the back of our net, and the power play in the third period,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said. “We should know better by now.”
Colorado fell to 13-31-2 with seven straight losses and are woeful 1-14-1 over the last 16 home games
“We’ve come up empty a lot, we only have the one point in the last seven games. I expected us to fight to the end to be in that hockey game. It’s just a tough way to lose for me. Penalties in the third period have been costing us,” Bednar said.
