In Vancouver, the Canucks won their second straight game under new leadership. This time it was a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins, after the skills competition.
Thatcher Demko made 35 saves in the Canucks win.
Head coach Bruce Boudreau has chased a few of the ghosts who were plaguing the lineup.
“Everyone feels confident we can go into the next one and get another one,” Vancouver’s Quinn Hughes said. “We’re taking it one game at a time and one week at a time and that was the message when Coach came in. For the first two games, we’re doing really good and the amazing thing is I think we can play better.”
Vancouver improved to 10-15-2.
Brock Boeser scored for the Canucks in regulation.
“Our group has really come together,” Boeser said. “Tonight was another great step for us and we’ve got to continue to play hard and play together.”
Patrice Bergeron score Boston’s only goal in the game.
“It was what we expected,” Boston assistant coach Joe Sacco said. “They seem to be more aggressive on the forecheck and they were more aggressive on their [penalty] kill, but our power play responded with a big goal of its own too. Would have been nice to get the extra point here tonight, but we have to regroup and get ready for a game tomorrow [at the Edmonton Oilers].”
Boston dropped to 12-8-2.
Boeser had been one of the Canucks’ disappointments this season.
“I’ve talked about how I want to produce for this team and help us win hockey games and to get a couple in the last couple wins, I think it means a lot and it’s big for my confidence,” Boeser said.
Jeremy Swayman made 31 saves in the Bruins loss.
“Definitely not satisfied. We need more,” Bergeron said. “That being said, I think the net front presence was there. We just weren’t shooting. The presence was there and at times we try to make the extra pass and we have to bring it on net.”
