In Vancouver, the New Jersey Devils built a 4-0 lead through periods of play in a 5-2 win over the Canucks on Tuesday night.
Mackenzie Blackwood made 21 saves in the win.
“The energy in the room is really good,” said Blackwood. “Guys are having a lot of fun, loose before the games. It’s an atmosphere in here we haven’t had in a long time, so it’s exciting.”
Vancouver’s Bo Horvat hit for a pair of power play goals in the third period.
“They outworked us. When they outwork you, the success is going to follow,” Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “You give up a power-play goal in [eight] seconds, give up a short-handed goal, that’s pretty well the ballgame.”
Nico Hischier had a power-play goal to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead in the first period.
“We kind of had a set play,” Hischier said. “Bratt is able to shoot, or if he sees something, he obviously can pass, and luckily he saw me there.”
Michael McLeod pushed the lead to 2-0 in the first.
“Obviously the puck’s going in right now,” said Horvat. “I’d rather be getting wins than scoring goals right now. I’d rather have none and be obviously 9-0, but it’s not the way it’s going right now.”
Dawson Mercer struck for a shorthanded goal in the middle frame for a 3-0 lad to New Jersey.
Yegor Sharangovich Extended the advantage to 4-0 before the end of the second period.
“He’s a smart player,” Hischier said of Sharangovich. “He can read plays and that’s why he’s on the PK as well. He’s really smart, he has great positioning. You get those chances if you’re in the right spot, and he’s a guy that can for sure bury the puck.”
Jack Hughes hit an empty-net for the 5-2 final with 62 second left n the game.
Thatcher Demko made 32 saves in the loss.
