Canes upend Pens in OT, 3-2

In Raleigh, the Carolina Hurricanes’ Jordan Staal scored twice in regulation to rally the Canes back from an 0-2 deficit to the Pittsburgh Penguins and force extra time on Friday night.

Andrei Svechnikov completed the rally with a power play strike in the extra session, at 1:46.

“I just thought tonight was a great effort by everybody,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “Just no passengers, and everyone was playing their hardest. It doesn’t always work out, as we know, but I think tonight we got what we deserved.”

Antti Raanta made 22 saves in the Carolina win.

The Hurricanes moved to 38-12-5.

Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby put the Pens up, 2-0, early in the game.

“I didn’t think we did as good a job in the second and third (periods) just controlling territory,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. “If you can hang on to pucks in the offensive zone and force them to expend energy defending us, it takes them out of the game they want to play a little bit. I just didn’t think we did it as consistently enough in the second and the third.”

The Penguins fell to 34-14-9.

Casey DeSmith made 38 saves in the Pens loss.

“It was a good goal,” DeSmith said of the winning goal. “Obviously a rebound, It just happened pretty fast. We left the flank guy and there was a little scramble there. Four-on-3’s are tough.”
