In Raleigh, Seth Jones had two goals for the Columbus Blue Jackets, including the game-winner in extra time for a 3-2 win over the Hurricanes on Thursday night.
“We needed someone to take control of the game for us. I thought he stood up and said, ‘I’m going to be the guy tonight,'” Columbus head coach John Tortorella said. “It’s one of the better games I’ve seen him play since he’s been here, at an important time.”
Joonas Korpisalo made 25 saves to get the victory.
“Crossing the blue line, I thought (Hurricanes defenseman) [Dougie] Hamilton was in a pretty good spot,” Jones said. “I looked pass first, and when I got to the top of the circle, I was thinking shot. With the ice not being the greatest, I just decided to put one on net.”
Sebastian Aho scored both Hurricanes’ goals.
“It could snowball, but I don’t think it will,” Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “You have to fight for everything you get, and that’s what happened tonight. We just weren’t quite ready to dig in at the start of the game.”
Kevin Stenlund scored for Columbus in the middle frame for a 2-1 lead.
“Obviously, it’s a big boost for confidence, just at that part of the game,” Stenlund said. “We were down 2-1, and it was a big goal for us.”
Carolina dropped to 20-7-2.
“We won a lot of pucks back in that power play, and obviously they were gassed,” Aho said. “Necas made a nice play in the slot, and I just one-timed it.”
Alex Nedeljkovic made 25 saves in the loss.
