Canes sweep season series with Buffalo in 5-2 home win

In Raleigh Friday night, the Carolina Hurricanes two-goal efforts from Jeff Skinner and Brock McGinn in a 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

“When we find a way to play at a high level, all four lines playing with pace, that’s when we’re at our best,” Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said.

Cam Ward made 36 saves for the win; it was his 600th career NHL game.

“[Skinner] took the game over in my opinion. He was just that dominant. He really has been one of our best players all season long. To see him get a couple goals and get a milestone on his part is impressive,” Ward said.

The Sabres got goals from William Carrier and Brian Gionta, who scored shorthanded to cut the Sabres’ deficit to 3-2..

McGinn made the score 3-1 in favor of the Canes and the Sabres sagged after that goal.

“Seeing them score and getting affected by it, you can just see us start thinking again,” Buffalo’s Ryan O’Reilly said. “We start thinking and we start to get a little more individual and it breaks us down and it’s frustrating.”

Victor Rask also scored for the Canes.

After trailing 1-0 through the first twenty minutes of play, the Canes responded with a three-goal middle frame to take control of the game.

“Especially in the second period, playing with the puck and managing the puck is such a huge factor,” Buffalo head Dan Bylsma said. “They used it to their advantage and showed their speed and showed their puck movement and caught us in situations where we’re desperately trying to get off the ice, and we make poor changes and they’re back the other way.”
