Canes rout Sabres, 6-2

In Raleigh, the Carolina Hurricanes’ offense opened up for a 6-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

“We got our Grade A’s, they went in,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “I think we deserved it after what’s gone on here the last little while. It’s nice that we got off that losing momentum that was kind of building. You put that behind us. It was a good win. We needed it.”

Teuvo Teravainen hit for a pair of goals, including a shorthanded strike for Carolina.

Antti Raanta made 32 saves in the Carolina win.

Henri Jokiharju and Zemgus Girgensons were the Buffalo goal scorers.

“Little details, and good hockey teams don’t need much,” Buffalo head coach Don Granato said. “They took advantage of just about every little one. It’s a testament to their ability to jump on any little mistake and capitalize on it. We jumped on a lot of their mistakes and didn’t capitalize. Otherwise the game would not have got out of hand like that.”

The Hurricanes improved to 16-6-1.

Martin Necas and Vincent Trocheck  had goals for the Canes.

“The scoring chances they had were really good ones, like breakaways and three or four shots right in front of our net,” the Sabres’ Victor Olofsson said. “We’re giving up too many Grade A scoring chances. It makes it hard for us.”

Nino Niederreiter and Ian Cole also scored for Carolina.

“It’s the NHL, you’re going to go through droughts here and there,” Trocheck said. “Obviously it’s going to hurt your confidence a little bit, so to put the puck in the net tonight and have six, it helps the confidence.”

Malcolm Subban, got the start for the Sabres and surrendered six goals and made 19 saves.  He left the game midway through the third period with an apparent injury.

Aaron Dell made four saves in relief.
