The St Louis Blues could not whistle their way past the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday and lost a 5-2 decision in Raleigh.
The Canes improved to 35-23-6 as Curtis McElhinney made 21 saves for the win.
Sebastian Aho scored for the Canes.
“They forecheck hard, and we were ready for that,” Aho said. “They’re a good team, and that was a good win.”
The Blues dropped to 34-34-6.
Vince Dunn and Oskar Sundqvist scored for St Louis.
“I don’t think we were consistently good enough as a whole,” Dunn said. “We’re playing pretty good hockey right now. That’s kind of a setback for us, and I think it’s just one we’ve got to forget about.”
Justin Williams, Justin Faulk, Jordan Staal, and Andrei Svechnikov also scored for the Canes.
“I think everyone was ready to go from the drop, which was great to see,” McElhinney said. “Phenomenal effort, but a couple weird bounces, I think. Other than that, I thought we played a great game.”
Carolina is in the third place in the Metropolitan Division with a point clearance.
“It’s just exciting to get back and be part of it,” Staal said. “Obviously the boys were rolling and I just wanted to help as best as I can.”

Jake Allen made 19 saves in the loss.
“I thought they did a great job of not giving us any room out there. It was a tight game all around. We never really got to our game or controlled play in the offensive zone. We have to do a better job,” Blues head coach Craig Berube said after the disappointing effort.
