Canes edge Stars on Skills

In Dallas, a late goal from the Stars’ Joe Pavelski forced extra time with the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night before the Canes prevailed on penalties, 4-3.

Vincent Trocheck scored in the skills competition for the win.

“Tonight he looked solid and, obviously, the shootout, that’s tough,” Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “They’ve got some high-end players coming in on him. I think he was the difference in the game tonight.”

Alex Nedeljkovic made 26 saves to get the win.

Jason Dickinson and Jason Robertson also scored for the Stars.

“Did we play well enough to win that game? Yeah. Are we throwing points away? Yeah, we are,” Dallas head coach Rick Bowness said. “We’re outplaying teams and giving away points, so that has to correct itself here. We’re going to need more from everyone to make that balance swing in our favor.”

Jordan Martinook, Teuvo Teravainen and Jordan Staal scored in regulation for Carolina.

“It probably wasn’t our best game, but at the end of the day we got the win,” Martinook said. “It’s nice to come out of here with four points, that’s for sure. This is a season where every point is crucial.”

Jake Oettinger made 18 saves in the loss.
