Canes defeat Avs, 3-1, move into playoff position

In Raleigh Saturday, the Carolina Hurricanes rode Brock McGinn‘s two goals to a 3-1 win over the visiting Colorado Avalanche.

“McGinn was the man tonight,” the Canes’ Cam Ward, said after the game.. “Clearly he was feeling it. The kid plays the right way. It’s nice to see him get rewarded.”

Ward made 29 saves yo pick up the win; he is 4-1-1 over the last six starts.

Tyson Barrie scored to give the Avs an early 1-0 lead before the Canes scored three unanswered goals.

The Avs are just 2-5-1 in their last eight games and dropped to 29-21-4 with the loss.

McGinn wiped out the 1-0 deficit with his goals.

“We made the exact same mistake on both goals,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said. “We chased below the goal line and left the front of the net open, left our coverage and they slipped it through us. Both of those goals (ended up) looking the exact same way for me.”

Jeff Skinner also scored for the Canes when he made it 3-1 in the third period.

The Avs were unable to generate much offense in the third period when the game was still up for grabs; they managed just seven shots in that final frame.

“When the game is on the line, you’ve got to double your shot count and make it a tougher night on Ward,” the Avs’ Gabriel Landeskog said. “I’m sure if you ask him it was a pretty easy night.”

Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves in taking the loss and had little or no offensive support to take the pressure off the defensive zone.

“You’ve got to learn how to generate on the road. You’ve got to learn how to put a little extra into your defending mentality on the road. I’ve got to be honest, I liked the effort tonight. We were there competing, we were skating, and the game had a really good pace to it,” Bednar said after the loss.
