In Raleigh, a three-goal second period sent the Carolina Hurricanes past the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-1, on Monday night.
Frederik Andersen made 24 saves to stop his old club.
“The most difficult part was to not think about what they’re going to do because I know them so well,” Andersen said. “You kind of play those mind games a little bit. It was tough mentally to shut that off and not try to analyze every play and just react to it.”
Auston Matthews scored the Leafs only goal to give Toronto an early 1-0 lead.
“When you’re playing against the Carolina Hurricanes, I think they set the standard in the League,” Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “Despite the fact that we competed at a higher level today that was required in the game, it’s still not to the level necessary to be able to compete with a team like that. That’s the hardest game we’ve played this season by a wide margin.”
Sebastian Aho, Steven Lorentz, and Nino Niederreiter scored in the middle frame for a 3-1 Canes lead.
Andrei Svechnikov popped in an empty-goal in the third period to ice the win.
Jack Campbell made 32 saves in the loss.
“I felt really good, but those three goals, I have the ability to make those saves,” Campbell said. “(If) I make those saves, we win the game.”
