In Raleigh, Andrei Svechnikov had a goal and assist in regulation and scored the only marker in the skills portion of the evening’s events as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the San Jose Sharks, 3-2, on Thursday.
“He’s just getting better and better and more confident with all his playmaking ability,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “He’s tough to handle, and he’s still just scratching the surface. I think there’s another level for him.”
Petr Mrazek made 28 saves in the win, and did not allow a strike in the skills competition.
Marcus Sorensen and Logan Couture scored for the Sjarks.
The Sharks dropped to 15-13-2.
“It was a gutsy point by us,” San Jose coach Peter DeBoer said. “This is always a hard rink to play in, and them getting [ahead] at different points had us on our heels a few times. I thought we battled through and persevered and found a way.”
Jake Gardiner also scored for the Canes in regulation.
“Originally, I was going to one-time the puck, but it wasn’t exactly in my wheelhouse, so I gave it back to him and he made a great pass back,” Gardiner said.

Aaron Dell made 27 saves in the loss.
“I didn’t really think he was going to shoot it when he did in the shootout, but he got a good shot off, [off the] post and in,” Dell said of the shootout winner. “What are you going to do?”
