Canadiens fall hard to Isles, 6-2 Updated

In Montreal, the New York Islanders’ Brock Nelson scored four goals in a 6-2 win for the Isles over the Canadiens on Thursday night.

Nick Suzuki and Tyler Toffoli scored late power play goals to cut the margin to  make the score a little more respectable.

“I thought our line played well and it’s a byproduct of a couple of nice plays,” Nelson said. “[Kyle Palmieri] had an unbelievable backhand touch on the first one. A couple of good plays from ‘Beau’ to get a few, so it’s always nice to have a great night.”

The Habs dropped to 3-9-0.

“It’s frustrating for sure, but I won’t come here and give a show, like, I won’t be making headlines, being on YouTube for 20 years,” Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme said. “What I have to say, I’ll be telling my guys.”

Ilya Sorokin made 36 saves for the Islanders in the win.

“He makes some saves that you don’t think he’s going to make and he gives us a chance to counter and go the other way,” New York head coach Barry Trotz said. “He gives us a chance every night.”

Oliver Wahlstrom and Jean-Gabriel Pageau  scored single markers for the Isles.

The Islanders improved to 4-2-2.

“We had a good start, we did the right things,” the Isles Andrew Beauvillier said. “They had a push late in the third period, but our goalie was really good for us. We were hard to play against, which is really our identity. We took care of all the details that have brought us success in recent games. It was really a game in our image.”

Jake Allen got the start and was given the hook after yielding five goals, four of them in the middle frame; he 20 saves.

Sam Montembeault made 10 saves in the final 20 minutes of play.

“We’ve just got to find a way,” the Canadiens’ Jake Evans said. “I think there’s some mental lapses, just some tougher plays, tougher reads that are costing us, and it seems like everything’s going in the back of the net.”
