PHILADELPHIA – Sean Couturier hit for the deciding marker on penalties on Wednesday night to give the Flyers a 3-2 win over the visiting Montreal Canadiens.
The Flyers moved to 21-14-6.
“I liked the way we handled ourselves,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “We needed to reset how we play. Last home game before we go out for three. I just don’t think we’ve been playing fast enough. I don’t think we’ve been direct enough going north. Montreal plays hard, they find a way to stay in games. … I just liked the speed of our game. That was the most important thing for the coaches, is just to get back to our checking, to allow us to get the puck to go north as quick as possible. And I thought we did it fairly consistently tonight.”
Samuel Ersson made 17 saves in the win.
The Flyers rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit to rake the win.
Owen Tippet scored at 15:41 of the first period to trim the 2-0 deficit to 2-1.
The Flyers’ Morgan Frost hit off the power play with 14 seconds left in the middle frame to tie the match, 2-2, forcing the extra session, which solved nothing, after a scoreless third period.
Montreal dropped to 17-17-6.
The Canadiens had two shots on goal in the opening stanza, and scored on both of them.
“Talked about it before the game, come out the right way, be ready to play,” Canadiens forward Josh Anderson said. “We knew that they were going to be ready to play. They were. You’re not going to win too many games when you play 40, 45 minutes of hockey. We made a good push at the end, but I thought we could be a lot better today.”
Sean Monahan scored with 89 seconds gone in the game for a 1-0 lead to the Habs.
The Canadiens pushed the lead to 2-0 just past the midway point of the first on a goal from David Savard who launched a shot from the right point.
“We need to protect that lead better,” the Canadiens’ Nick Suzuki said. “We were up two but we weren’t playing good. Should make everyone feel a lot better about themselves and with our game, but you just kind of let them back in. Just wasn’t good enough tonight. We need to be a lot better.”
Cayden Primeau made 37 saves through extra time.
