PENSACOLA, FL – All eyes are on the Pensacola Ice Flyers this weekend as they head to Huntsville AL and then Evansville IN for their first away games of the season. Edged out by Huntsville at home in game 1, the Ice Flyers rebounded with a decisive win against the Macon Mayhem and then proceeded to recapture lost ground against Huntsville with a solid 5 – 3 victory on last Saturday’s fan skate night.
The Ice Flyers will be facing a few challenges to go along with the 3 – day road weekend. Weiland Parrish, who has been a major key player with 6 assists in the first 3 contests, has been called up to the ECHL Kalamazoo K-Wings. Malik Johnson has been suspended for 2 games in a controversial decision by the SPHL after an unpenalized hit against a Huntsville player on Saturday. Pro Hockey News was on hand and witnessed a number of attacks against Johnson, with one player literally throwing and tackling him on the ice without drawing a penalty.
“Johnson stayed disciplined,” said Pensacola head coach Rod Aldolff. “You can still be tough and be disciplined.”
Jan Salak, who scored his first goal of the season for the Ice Flyers on Saturday and was named 3rd game star, is reportedly on IR with a hand injury. PHN acquired a video of Salak’s impressive puck handling and shot off of an equally impressive assist by Parrish from the Ice Flyer’s fan page:
“It was right off the rush,” recalled Aldolff. Parrish chipped it to himself, got the puck back, and made a nice hitch play over to Jan who made a great shot. It was quick, smart hockey. Jan is a great shooter.”
The Ice Flyers will be once again be facing a familiar team with matching speed on Friday, and on to Evansville for a 2-game series against a team that has lost 3 straight at the hands of Peoria and the Quad City Storm. Pensacola looked much more refined and on target last Saturday after a rather clumsy game 2 against Macon that still saw the Ice Flyers chalk up a win. Hopefully the Ice Flyers can tap the depth from their roster to keep up the momentum on the road.
