In Edmonton, the Oilers placed Jack Campbell on waivers Tuesday.
If he clears waivers he will be sent the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League.
This season, Campbell has had a tough campaign. He is 1-4-0 with a 4.50 goals-against average and .873 save percentage.
Not all of theta is on Campbell. The rest of the Oilers have been in disarray, going 2-9-1 on the season. They were beaten, badly, in Vancouver, 6-2 with Connor McDavid and several other skaters erupting in scrums when the game was a foregone conclusion at 4-2 in favor of the Canucks.
“I think you’ve heard me say things a million times, our goaltenders wear the same jerseys as the rest of the team,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said Monday. “[Are] there moments that our goaltending can be better? Yeah, there are. [Are] there moments that our team or individual players at different positions can be better? Yeah. The nature of that position is that you’re the last line so if a mistake is made, it ends up in the net. If you’re a forward, you make a mistake, you’re usually away from the net and there [are] other people that can usually help cover.”
Woodcroft was tossed from the game in the third period on Monday, after a bench minor and 10-minute misconduct.
Blame your goalies all you want, the problems are deeper than the crease, this team is not playing as a unit.
Stuart Skinner was the starter for the Oilers on Monday night, and suffered the same fate of Campbell this season, poor play in front of him.
On the season, Skinner is 1-4-1, a 3.99 GAA, and .856 save percentage.
At some point you need to look our from the crease at the play of the defense and the back checking forwards.
Well, look at what they should be doing.
The Oilers are surrendering an average of 4.27 goals per game through 12 games; this is second worst in the league to the San Jose Sharks at 4.91.
The Condors are currently icing two goalies, Olivier Rodrigue or Calvin Pickard. If Campbell ends up i Bakersfield, then either would be a candidate for call up.
