In Montreal, William Nylander opened the scoring in a three-goal second period on
Tuesday and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Canadiens, 4-0, in Game 4 of their first round series.
“I think we just need to forget about this one quick,” Montreal’s Joel Armia said. “It’s not over yet. I feel like we have a good atmosphere in the locker room. Everybody knows that it’s not over and we’re going to work hard for the next game.”
The Leafs lead the series, 3-1.
“I thought we had good chances to score tonight,” Montreal head coach Dominique Ducharme said. “We had some good looks. But sometimes guys think about it and squeeze the stick. Confidence is a big thing when you’re talking about scoring goals.”
Jack Campbell made 32 saves for the shutout and win.
“I think the guys just did a great job in front of me,” Campbell said. “I mean, we just stuck to our game plan, got a nice lead and then everybody was just battling. So it’s not always the prettiest, but we battled until the end ….”
The Canadiens have scored just four goals in the four games thus far.
Jason Spezza and Joe Thornton also scored for the Maple Leafs.
“We’re going to see their absolute best next game and we have to make sure that we’re ready to go,” Spezza said. “It’s important we get some rest here after a tough back-to-back, and then we’ve got to come ready to play because they’re going to be a determined team. The fourth win is the hardest to get.”
Game 5 is set for Toronto on Thursday.
Alex Galchenyuk added an empty-net goal with under four minutes left in the game; he also added two assists in the win.
“He’s stayed with it, stayed ready,” Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “He’s gotten better in each game that he’s played and obviously he was a major difference-maker tonight for us.”
Carey Price made 24 saves in the loss.
