READING, PA – There is an old saying in professional sports that when you have your opponent down, put your foot on them and never let them get back up. The Calgary Hitmen are proving to be a tough opponent to kill by destroying the Kelowna Rockets 6-1 in Game 5 of the WHL finals. Kelowna still leads the series 3-2, but have allowed the Hitmen to get off the mat to live another day. After being outscored 10-3 in the first three games of the series, Calgary has now outscored the Rockets 12-3 in the last two games. Joel Broda, a fifth round pick of the Washington Capitals in 2008, scored twice and added an assist as part of Calgary’s 50 shot assault on Kelowna goaltender Mark Guggengerger. Kelowna could only muster 19 shots of their own on Calgary goaltender Martin Jones. The Hitmen scored the first two goals of the game before Kelowna’s Cody Almond narrowed the gap to 2-1. Calgary would score the four unanswered goals the rest of the night to pound Kelowna on the scoreboard. The Hitmen were benefitted by nine power play opportunities, scoring on two of them. The Rockets went 0-4 on the night. Game 6 will be on Saturday night. If Game 7 is necessary it will be on Monday night. Contact the author at Brian.Jennings@prohockeynews.com
