Calgary extends streak to seven games with 5-2 win over Isles

Since Brian Elliott started to feel comfortable in the Calgary Flames net he and the Flames have been hot.  On Sunday Elliot made 33 saves to send Calgary to their seventh straight win, 5-2, over the New York Islanders.

Sean Monahan had a goal and two points for the Flames who improved to 36-26-4 and are 8-0-1 in their nine.

“It’s big,” Monahan said. “It’s an important time of year. Everyone’s buying in right now and everyone’s contributing. [Elliott] has been playing great and keeping us in games here. This is a great stretch.”

Micheal Ferland, and Kris Versteeg struck for goals for Calgary who are eight points clear of the Los Angeles Kings for the first wild card spot.

“We’re going through a good streak here,” Calgary captain Mark Giordano said. “You have to pile on as many points as you can on these streaks, but keep trying to get better.”

Michael Frolik and TJ Brodie also scored for the Flames.

“They didn’t let up,” Monahan said. “They’re a good team, so I think we might’ve taken our foot of the gas a little bit and we definitely shouldn’t have.”

The Isles, who are on a nine-game roadie are 3-2-1 through six of those games and dropped to 30-23-11.

“Obviously playing our third in three-and-a-half days, sometimes you’ve just got to keep it simple early, get our legs going and get yourselves involved,” Tavares said. “They’re playing with a lot of confidence and they had some jump playing at home with the way they’ve been playing.”

Thomas Greiss got the start for the Islanders but was relieved by Jean-Francois Berube.

“We kind of left [Thomas Greiss] out to dry. There were some uncharacteristic mistakes by our group. It’s hard to get down 4-0 at this time of the year at any point of the game, let alone in the first period. It’s frustrating — move on, that’s all you can do,” New York’s Travis Hamonic said of the team’s defensive support for their goalie.
