Burrows strikes twice in Senators 2-1 win over Colorado

In Ottawa Thursday, the Senators kept pace with the Montreal Canadiens with a hard fought, 2-1, win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Both goals came from Alexandre Burrows who was acquired in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks on Monday.

Some had questioned the trade before Thursday’s game and may continue to do so.

“Wonder what people think of the trade now? What I like about Alex is, already on the bench, he’s starting to do his thing. He gets the shots on the first goal and the second goal, but he blocked shots, he had some huge hits. He’s just a relentless guy,” Ottawa head coach Guy Boucher said after the game.

Burrows played his first game for the Sens Thursday.

“I like the way we played,” Burrows said. “There’s a lot of good players here, and if we play the right way, we’ll have some success. Tonight was definitely a step in the right direction. For me personally, playing with some good players, they find me, making good plays. Got a couple of pucks towards the net.

“The first one was pretty lucky, the second one I think it went through the D-man’s legs. It was a seeing-eye shot. We’ll take those. The biggest thing is we found a way to get a big win. That’s why I’m here.”

Craig Anderson made 22 saves to get the win for the Senators as Ottawa improved to 34-22-6.

Rene Bourque scored to the lone goal for Colorado in the loss.

Calvin Pickard made 40 saves in taking the loss as the Avs dropped to  17-42-3.

“I didn’t think we were that good,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said. “We gave up 40-plus shots. Penalties early that kind of put us on our heels a bit after a decent start to the game. We kind of lost our steam. We turned too many pucks over just inside our blue line and in the neutral zone which gave them a lot of their shots and chances in the first half of the game.”

Colorado is now 1-12-1 in their last 14 games.

“No distractions,” Pickard said. “We just have to go out and play our game and not worry about anything. You’ve got to give Ottawa credit. They played a good game tonight. We were right there at the end. It would have been nice to tie it up and get into overtime.”
