In Anaheim Tuesday night, Martin Jones made 34 saves for the San Jose Sharks in a 3-2 overtime win over the Ducks.
Brent Burns scored the game-winner just past the midway point of the extra session.
“We found a way,” coach Peter DeBoer said. “Our goalie was our best player. I think last time in here we played a great game and found a way to lose in the last minute. I guess the hockey gods even things out sometimes.”
The Sharks have a habit this season of finding their way in overtime; San Jose is 6-1 in overtime this season.
They have also won seven of their eight games.
“I have no clue,” Burns said . “It’s 3-on-3 and anything can happen.”
Conversely, the Ducks are 1-7 past regulation.
“We have to sort it out and really look into it. We’ve lost too many. With where we’re going and how tight the [Pacific Division] is going to be, we have to find ways to get that second point if that’s in overtime or a shootout,” the Ducks’ Andrew Cogliano said of the poor OT record.
Jakob Silfverberg and Ondrej Kase scored for Anaheim.
The Sharks took control of the puck in overtime immediately after the face-off and never gave up possession until the Burns winner.
“We won the faceoff, and they ended up with the puck for the first two minutes of it,” Carlyle said. “I think they made three line changes before we got our guys off. It was part parcel who we had on the ice. And when the goal went in, we wouldn’t normally have a young player like Kase out there, but the other players were gassed.”
