After seven straight losses to start the season, Ohio State’s hockey team finally won on Halloween night. But then had to wait two weeks for the opportunity to build on it. When they finally got to play again against Canisius, they turned their one win into a three-game streak with a sweep of the Golden Griffins.
David Gust had two assists and the Buckeyes got goals from Luke Stork, Matthew Weis, Anthony Greco and Brandon Kearney in a 4-1 win on Friday night. The Buckeyes got great goaltending from Matt Tomkins (29 saves), as the Buckeyes fired 46 shots on goal — including 20 in the first period.
On Saturday night, the Buckeyes’ special teams led the way in a 6-4 win, converting 3-of-6 power play chances and stopping all six Canisius power plays, including a five-minute major. Gust and Nick Shilkey each had a goal and two assists, while Greco, Weis and Mason Jobst each had a goal and an assist. Ohio State (3-7) had a 3-2 lead after the first period as all the goals were scored inside the first 10 minutes of the game.
