COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 14-ranked Ohio State men’s hockey team scored the game’s final five goals to down UConn, 7-4, Friday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes improve to 6-1-3 on the year, while the Huskies are now 3-3-4. The teams will close the series at 4 p.m. Saturday in Columbus.
Ohio State 7, UConn 4
The Buckeyes led 2-1 after the first period on goals from Josh Healey shorthanded and David Gust, but UConn scored twice in the first 5:15 of the second to go ahead 3-2 and then added a goal at 13:23 for a 4-2 advantage.
Ohio State went on to score the next five goals to come from behind for the win. The Buckeyes answered the fourth UConn goal less than a minute later to draw within one on a Gust tally, tied the game 19 seconds after that on Mason Jobst’s goal and took the lead just over a minute later on a tally by Nick Schilkey. Ohio State held a 5-4 lead through 40 minutes. In the third, the Buckeyes scored twice in the final five minutes, with a power play tally by Gust to complete his hat trick and a Luke Stork empty net goal.
In the Win …
• Senior David Gust notched his first career hat trick (the Buckeyes’ second of the year).
• Senior Nick Schilkey picked up his 100th career point with an assist in the first period and added a goal and another assist for a three-point night. He has 102 points as a Buckeye, with 51 goals and 51 assists.
• Junior Matthew Weis had a three-assist outing, his second of the season.
• Freshman Tanner Laczynski had two helpers for his fifth multiple-point game.
• Senior Josh Healey had a goal and an assist for his fourth two-point night in the last six games.
• Sophomore John Wiitala extended his point streak to seven with an assist.
• The Buckeyes scored five or more goals for the fifth time in the last seven games. The team is first in the NCAA with 4.70 goals per game.
