Buckeyes, Miami tie, 1-1

OXFORD, Ohio – With a goal from senior David Gust and 22 saves from senior goalie Matt Tomkins, the No. 19/15 Ohio State men’s hockey team tied Miami, 1-1, Saturday in Steve Cady Arena.PHN_BSOG-200x133

Ohio State is now 1-0-2 on the year after posting a second consecutive tie. Miami is 1-1-1 this season.

The Buckeyes opened the scoring just 3:42 into the game, as David Gust scored on a rebound. Early in the second Miami tied the game with a 5-on-3 power play goal. That was the only scoring in the game, as neither team could score through regulation and five minutes of overtime. Chances were at a premium in the matchup, with the teams combining for just 47 shots on goal. Each netminder had a number of outstanding saves.

A Buckeye “Win”
After the five minute overtime, the game between the Buckeyes and RedHawks was officially a tie. Per NCHC protocol, a five minute 3-on-3 overtime was held, but neither team able to score to break the deadlock. A sudden victory shootout followed to determine a winner. Buckeye goalie Matt Tomkins made a save on the RedHawk attempt and Buckeye freshman Tanner Laczynski won the shootout for Ohio State with a goal.
